GOD PREPARES A PEOPLE FOR THE SAVIOR
Throughout this study, we are reading Dei Verbum carefully in continuity with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church – considering both what the text says and how it must be understood within the Faith handed down through the centuries.
In Day Nine, we begin Chapter Four with section 14 and turn our attention to the Old Testament. Far from being merely a collection of ancient histories – or a preliminary work that lost its importance with the coming of Christ – the Old Testament reveals God’s deliberate preparation for the salvation of the human race.
God chose a people for Himself, entered into covenant with Abraham and with Israel through Moses, and gradually made Himself known through His words and deeds. Through the prophets, Israel came to understand more deeply the ways of God, while carrying among the nations the promise of the salvation that was still to come.
Section 14 reminds us that the Old Testament is the record of a divine election: God forming a people, revealing His holiness, and preparing the way for Christ.
