SACRED MUSIC:

WHEN THE CHURCH SINGS, CHRIST’S WORD DWELLS WITHIN HER

Today we continue our journey through Sacrosanctum Concilium with Day Eight: “Sacred Music: When the Church Sings, Christ’s Word Dwells Within Her.”

Today’s reading invites us to consider the place of music in the liturgy. The Council calls the Church’s musical tradition a treasure of inestimable value. Sacred song is joined to the words and actions of worship. It helps us pray, unites our voices, and gives solemnity to the sacred rites.

Chapter VI asks that this treasury be preserved and fostered with great care. It gives Gregorian chant pride of place in the Roman liturgy while welcoming other worthy forms, including sacred polyphony. It calls for choirs, musical formation, and the participation of the faithful. It also reminds composers that the texts we sing should draw chiefly from Sacred Scripture and the liturgy.

These teachings ask us to look beyond personal preference. Does the music at Mass help us hear and pray the Church’s words? Does it serve what is happening at the altar? Are we willing to take part through singing, prayerful listening, and sacred silence?

St. Paul urges us to let the word of Christ dwell within us abundantly. When the Church sings, she gives voice to the Word she has received. Her song should lead us more deeply into worship and draw our hearts toward God.

Please join us for Day Eight as we read the Council in continuity with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the perennial teachings of the Catholic Church.

May Christ teach us to pray with the Church’s voice. May the words we sing dwell in our hearts, strengthen our faith, and give glory to God.
