THE LAITY:

BAPTISMAL DIGNITY, CHRISTIAN WITNESS, AND THE KINGSHIP OF CHRIST

Today we continue our reading of Lumen gentium with Chapter 4, “The Laity.”

The plumb line is the truth received from Christ and handed down in His Church. As we examine this chapter alongside Scripture, the Church Fathers, and the earlier papal teaching, we identify departures in the understanding and practice of the lay vocation that require correction.

These include confusion between the priesthood of the baptized and Holy Orders, reducing the lay vocation to parish activity, separating conscience from truth, and treating faith as irrelevant to public responsibilities. These departures affect how Catholics understand the Mass, raise their children, earn their living, and bear witness to Christ.

Please read thoughtfully. Our purpose is to recognize what faithfully expresses Catholic teaching, name departures honestly, and bring our own lives under the same standard.

Please set aside time to read and reflect on the document. As we study, let us pray for the Pope, our bishops, and our priests, that they may fulfill their sacred duties with courage, clarity, and fidelity to Our Lord.

In Christ,
