BEFORE WE CONTINUE: CONTINUITY DOES NOT MEAN EQUAL PRECISION

Before we enter into today’s sections, we consider an important principle: continuity does not necessarily mean equal precision. A later text may be read in continuity with what the Church has always taught while expressing that teaching with less clarity or precision. Assuming that every formulation is equally exact can prove dangerous, because it may obscure important distinctions and allow ambiguity to be treated as though it were settled doctrine.

Throughout this study, we are reading this document carefully in continuity with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church – considering both what the text says and how it must be understood within the faith handed down through the centuries.

In Day Five, we examine Chapter Two, sections 8 and 9.
