HOW CATHOLICS SHOULD READ THE COUNCIL:
AN INTRODUCTION TO READING DEI VERBUM
Welcome to Day One of our “Pillars of Faith 14-Day Dei Verbum Reading Challenge.”
Over the next fourteen days, we will go directly to the text of the Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation. We will read it carefully, prayerfully, and in the light of the Catholic faith handed down from Christ and the Apostles through Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition.
We begin today with an essential principle: The Faith did not begin at Vatican II.
In its very first paragraph, Dei Verbum tells us that the Council intended to follow “in the footsteps of the Council of Trent and of the First Vatican Council.” Those words provide the starting point – and an important guidepost – for our entire journey.
Today’s reading is longer than the single paragraph of Dei Verbum we are examining because we want to establish clearly how Catholics should approach the Council. Please give yourself time to read it thoughtfully. Do not rush. Read Dei Verbum paragraph 1 more than once, consider the Scripture passages, and spend some time with the reflection questions and closing prayer.
During these fourteen days, we are not simply trying to finish another document. We are seeking to understand more deeply the faith we have received, so that we may guard it, live it, and faithfully hand it on.

Thank you for joining us. May the Holy Ghost give us humble hearts, clear minds, and a sincere love for the truth as we begin.
READ THE COUNCIL. KEEP THE FAITH.
