WHO SPEAKS IN SACRED SCRIPTURE?
Throughout this study, we are reading Dei Verbum carefully in continuity with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church – considering both what the text says and how it must be understood within the faith handed down through the centuries.
In Day Seven, we begin Chapter Three with sections 11 and 12, which address two essential questions: How can Sacred Scripture be truly the Word of God when it was written by human authors – and how are we to interpret it faithfully?
We examine the Church’s teaching on divine inspiration and the truth of Scripture, including what it means to say that the sacred books teach without error. We then consider why Scripture cannot be interpreted according to personal opinion or isolated passages, but must be read with attention to the authors’ intentions, the literary forms they used, the unity of the whole of Scripture, the living Tradition of the Church, and the analogy of faith.
These sections take us to the heart of what Catholics believe about the Bible: God is its true author, yet He chose to speak through real human authors – and He entrusted its authentic interpretation to the Church.

May this reading deepen our reverence for Sacred Scripture as the inspired Word of God and help us to receive and understand it within the living faith of the Church.
