WHO GUARDS THE DEPOSIT OF FAITH?

Throughout this study, we are reading Dei Verbum carefully in continuity with Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the perennial teaching of the Catholic Church – considering both what the text says and how it must be understood within the faith handed down through the centuries.

In Day Six, we conclude Chapter Two by examining section 10 and the relationship among Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church.

We also look directly at an important and difficult question: Where did some of the confusion following the Council enter? Certain expressions in this section were later separated from their proper doctrinal context and used to support what came to be called the “spirit of Vatican II.” We consider that confusion honestly, while also showing how the text must be read in continuity with the Church’s perennial teaching – not as a rupture with what the Church had always believed and taught.

May this reading deepen our understanding of the inseparable relationship among Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium – and strengthen our fidelity to the one sacred deposit of faith entrusted to the Church.
